TEAM COMICS: Harris O'Malley

posted by: [info]divalea

My good buddy and fellow Texas artist, Harris O'Malley needs some TEAM COMICS.

Harris' hard drive pair apparently killed itself dead in a backup, and has been shipped of for recovery, to the tune of about $4,000.
This hard drive has Harris's whole career on it, including his comics and art for an upcoming gallery show.

Harris is selling prints and taking commissions to defray the cost of the drive recovery. He's a hardworking dude, he's been busting his hump for as long as I've known him (which is back to the original Warren Ell1s F0rum, and he needs a hand.

We went so that K could ride La Marmotte, the most difficult one day cycling event in Europe -- and he made it, yay K!!!

The Story Thus Far...

It's re-cap week here at William Bazillion central. Chapter Six of "The Race for Santa's Nazi Gold" will start next week.

Work's been taking up much more time than usual the past week and isn't likely to let up in the near future, plus I'm picking away at an illustration job for Shaenon right now, and it makes more sense to take a slack-off week right now than waiting until Chapter Six picks up some momentum.

As always, http://www.williambazillion.com has the story. Miss it at your peril!

When it got too hot in the apartment I went and hung out on the campus, which was beautifully devoid of students. I took some film pictures. Annoyingly, I have a bunch more from a couple days ago that need to be developed, but the rolls got mixed in with the general mass of exposed film and we'll just have to wait until the twenty or so get developed to find mine.

Whole set here.

Life is in ballance

There seems to be a little good with all the bad right now. The universe doesn't seem to want to topple me completely and utterly over the edge just yet. It likes to see me teeter. I'm waiting for the sea gull or pigeon to land on my head and I go tumbling over. But nothing makes you truly appreciate the good like having a pile of bad every once in a while.

Good news; Angouleme, the convention in France that Happy Goth and I want to go to finally got back to me.
Bad news; It's $1,300 for a booth at the show.

Bad news; I got bitten by a spider and my leg swelled up.
Good news; it doesn't hurt anymore. It is getting better and if it does get worse, I will go to the doctor, I promise. The whole leg didn't swell, just the bit on the calf.

Good news; The second graphic novel is at the printer.
Bad news; it won't be done by San Diego because the publisher is trying to get a bunch of books printed at the same time and they're not all ready yet.
Good news; this will cut down on shipping costs
Bad news; I've given up hope that this book will every get printed
good news; I'm starting my own publishing company so that I print up my own books and send them to diamond so that when I bust my ass to get it done on time then it's done on time and no one but me can drop the ball (in theory).

Bad news; My home owners insurance place wants me to get work done on my roof.
Good news; I get a discount on my insurance because I'm getting a security system put in.

Good news; I'm getting a security system put in.
Bad news; someone walked through our house and took some stuff.
Good news; they didn't kill us
bad news; we were home at the time
good news; they didn't kill us
bad news; what the fuck, we were home and I was awake and all the lights and tv was on and a roomate was asleep on the couch, what the fuck!
good news; it was probably someone who knew someone who we knew so it wasn't totaly a crazy of the street who would have killed us.
bad news; but still. holy shit man, we were home and someone walked through the (unlocked) back door and took some stuff and walked out again and we didn't realize it until the next day when my roomate said "anybody seen my laptop?"
Good news; we're getting a security system put in.

So, things could be worse. I'm taking one step at a time to sort through it all. I've got two weeks to get everything done before I have four solid weeks of conventions starting with San Diego (which I might not live through), then Connecticon, Otakon, Conversion, and a weekend to breath before Dragon con. If anything, my mind will be so fried that there will be fantastic cartoons as a result.

In the words of "What About Bob?"
I'm good, I'm great, I'm wonderful...I'm good, I'm great, I'm wonderful...

We went to Stacie's new place for art night tonight, and took Eli along (as a cross between wishful thinking and experiment)... and... it worked out great! I've got most of page 4 of BYOB3 penciled out, and will soon start detailed pencils on page 5. I tried painting a scene in acrylics earlier today with little success... gotta revisit the basics of acrylic technique - I still can't seem to get the hang of that medium! And I did switch, on Chris Gargan's recommendation, from water to gloss medium for the thinning agent.

It's Cold in Leiden This Time of Year

Jul. 8th, 2008 | 07:20 pm
posted by: [info]beamjockey

I've just noticed that Thursday, 10 July, is the 100th anniversary of the first liquefaction of helium. It happened in Leiden, in Heike Kammerlingh Onnes's lab.

In a good article in the March 2008 Physics Today, Dirk van Delft portrays the rivalry between Kammerlingh Onnes and James Dewar of Cambridge (who had liquefied hydrogen, and who invented the invaluable Dewar flask) in the suspenseful race to obtain the first drop of liquid helium.
(PDF of article here.)

Liquid helium is, of course, the key to exploring temperatures near absolute zero. It's been essential to a great variety of physics experiments, and we use it every day in the Tevatron, MRI magnets, and other superconducting devices.

I don't know the best way to celebrate. Sing in a high-pitched voice. Maybe drink something cold.

You can buy this immaculate equipment, which produces 4000 bottles of 250ml (1000kg) per 8-hour shift.

Everything is here for you to start up. The price is ridiculously low, as the plant must be cleared by the last week in July.

I dismissed a brief daydream in which I move to India and become the Maharajah of Chutney.

1952: Willis and the Sauce-Bottles

Reading about this factory put me in mind of an essay penned by the legendary fanwriter Walter A. Willis, of Belfast, in 1952:

We were all the sort of people who read at meals and if there was nothing else to read we would read the lables on the jars and things on the table. We soon found that we all knew off by heart the lable on a sauce known as "H. P." Not only did this lable carry a much greater wordage than any marmalade jar, it was of immensely higher literary standard. For one thing, part of it was in French, which gave it an immense distinction in the eyes of us Francophiles. The lable had three sides. The middle one had a picture of the Houses of Parliament at Westminster, a statement that the sauce was made by Garton and Company, and a description of its constituents-- pure malt vinegar and oriental spices. On the lefthand side was the blurb in French--"Cette Sauce de premier choix...." --which we intoned with the solemnity we gave to Baudelaire and Rimbaud. And on the righthand side was a copy of a certificate by two public analysts that they had " regularly taken samples from stock and found the sauce to be in every way pure and wholesome. --signed A. Bostock Hill and William T. Rigby. " Read More...

(Thanks to Judy Bemis for putting this on-line.)

If only Willis had lived to receive this spam! He might have bought the thing himself. Sixty-five thousand pounds seems cheap, and apparently they throw in a Vat.

Imagine a factory churning out a thousand kilograms of sauce per eight-hour shift, where the copy on all the labels is written by Walt Willis! The mind boggles.

At last Willis, dressed in a white coat, working by the glow of plastic coated fluorescent lighting, could have achieved the perfect fusion of Sauce-Bottle Fandom and Fanzine Publishing. It's the fanzine you can pour on a steak! It would have been great.

1996: On Reading the A1 Label

Back when Willis's article was only a rumor to me, I set down my own thoughts culled from a lifetime of reading sauce-bottles.

Flashback to 1996: Ruminations on Sauce-Bottle Culture )

I thank Al von Ruff for his efforts to bring me to a more enlightened state. I think I'll go now and eat something I can put sauce on.

I have discovered that getting up at 6:30 is very difficult if one doesn't go to bed until 12:30.
I have also discovered that going to bed at 11:30 is very difficult if one is still at the bar at 11.
This follows from the well-known fact that it's not fun to leave the bar at 10 if the music doesn't stop till 11.

Thus, it's time for a nap.

I worked hard all day today and got up at 5:00pm to go home, gathered up my stuff, looked down at my cellphone, and saw it was only 4:00 pm. My computer’s time was off! I STILL HAD AN HOUR OF WORK LEFT TO DO. This is a terribly unfair thing to happen and I feel like someone handed me a piece of candy, then stole it from me again. BOOOOOO.

How was your weekend? We went down to the Kankakee River and cooked meat over open flame, and I played not-fetch with my parents’ dog. Not-fetch is where you pretend to throw a ball or whatever but don’t actually and the dog goes tearing off after nothing and then comes back looking at you like you’re the most hilarious jerk ever, and could you please just throw the damn ball already so her life can be complete? And then you throw it for reals and she runs after it and you alternate real throwing with fake throwing to keep her on her toes and it’s pretty awesome. I miss having a dog.

When silver soldering with a torch, the whole piece needs to come up to temp, or else the solder doesn't behave.  You know it's hot, the whole thing is kind of glowy-red.  When welding, only the area immediately near the weld gets hot, other parts, further away, may never even get warm.  And even the hot parts stop glowing before you can get the visor up.  Which leads you into a trap  when you go to reposition and grab for the wrong bit.

I've had my fingers soaking in a cup of cold water for a while now, thankfully there doesn't seem to be any blistering.

I should create a tag specifically for shop-related hand injury posts.  I've got a bunch of them now.

Abney Park, Trilobites, Automata

posted by: [info]kajafoglio

Soooo... Abney Park. I'm really late in mentioning them, because I've been hiding under a rock for quite a while now. So you probably already know all about them. I was actually pointed at this steampunk band last Fall. I went at looked at their home page (which you should do right now, because it's lovely) and thought "Oh, Lord. Look at these people. If I don't like their music, I'm going to cry." Fortunately, I did like their music, and was hugely tickled at what they were doing with their...er...I don't know what to call it. Band image? Artistic design? So I flung a bunch of money at them and got a pile of CDs and assorted merchandise in the mail. It took a while to get here, but I wasn't too worried. First of all, it didn't take an unreasonable amount of time, just a bit longer than web orders usually take. People are spoiled by the Web, I tell you. Why, back in the day... Erk. Sorry, I had to get in a little granny-practice. No, mostly, I wasn't worried because I had a feeling that they're like us, in that they're trying to do the creative part of the job, plus make their stuff and advertise and sell and ship it all themselves. I don't know why I thought that, the AP site is gorgeous and professional, maybe it's just my self-publisher radar. Anyway, I have since been told that yes, that's exactly how they do it. Except that they do it WAY better than we do. I love them for that. I love hearing about artists who do the whole thing themselves and do it well. It gives me hope that I may someday get my own act together enough to clean up my websites and market our work properly. Well, or at least get my e-mail partially answered.

Oh, and please, don't take this the wrong way. The business model is the only way I'm comparing us to them. I mean, they're a band. As I understand it, bands are cool by definition. We've never been cool in our lives. Buncha' dorks, we are. Heh.

Hm... what else? Something else you might like (now that I've bought the piece I wanted, mu-ha): the gear and trilobite jewelery from this etsy seller. Woohoo! Trilobites!

And a while ago I ran across The Automata / Automaton Blog: The Blog for Makers and Collectors of Mechanical Automata and Mechanical Toys. There's a lot of really good stuff there. I've loved this stuff ever since I first went to House on the Rock and saw the mechanical orchestras (oh, so long ago... )

Mercy, I'm such an old lady today. What's wrong with me? I need a cup of tea. (Goes creaking off.)
