The End of an Era...
As some of you may know, my wife Emily has been on a job hunt since last fall. Well, as of last Friday, that search is over, and she has accepted a wonderful opportunity. In Boston.

So, we're moving east. And while this means that I'm going to have to leave my beloved Chicago, I'm genuinely excited about this. I've known for months now that the chances that we could stay here were pretty slim, and I've had plenty of time to think about what it means. There have been job prospects from Long Island to the Bay Area, but not any here at home. It had me in a funk for awhile, but since this Boston gig has materialized, I've been in an increasingly better mood.

I'm torn about the idea of leaving Chicago, since I've invested so much here, especially in my artwork. But, I've lived here over ten years -- all of my adult life, and I've lived in the Midwest for twenty years. If I have to leave, this isn't a bad time. Obviously, it's going to mean some major changes, but I think they'll ultimately be for the better. Moving to the East Coast gives me an opportunity to expand more solidly into a new market, and puts me closer to more publishing houses. The first six months might be a little bumpy, but I'm confident I can make it work. In the end, Chicago will always be my adopted hometown, and my love for it will never go away.

In the short term it will mean I'll have to put the comic on hold while we take care of moving, but in the long run, it's going to mean I'll be able to focus on long term planning for my artwork. I also plan on getting some scripting and planning done before I start drawing again, so I'll be able to produce the comic much more quickly once I'm back.

We'll be moving at the end of March, and I will continue to update the comic over the next few weeks to finish out the current scene. After that I'll need to go on hiatus for a month or two in order to get our new house in order (quite literally) before returning. I'll keep you posted once I have that final plan together.

Thanks for all your support and patience. I promise you this will be a good thing. Just don't expect Kate & Mike to move to Boston, okay? ;)

Boston, and most of Massachusetts, is expensive. Connecticut is also terribly expensive, but Rhode Island and New Hampster are rather cheap. (And you can commute to Boston easily from RI!)

We'll manage. Her job will be paying our way, thankfully. You will not believe how excited I get over the concept over a budget that leaves room for savings these days. Yeesh.

We'll actually be on the north shore (Salem/Beverly area) to start, since that's where the job is. We'll figure out where to plant ourselves more permanently after we've lived there for awhile.

Hey, that's not too far from my hometown of Arlington! :)

Once you're settled in, you might want to talk to my friend Tyler at Pandemonium books. (http://www.pandemoniumbooks.com/) He organizes a lot of author signings and it would be an excuse for you to meet many of the geeks in the area!

While I'm sure it'll be hard leaving Chicago, Steph and I live in Providence! It's only about an hour away, so we'll be neighbors! I also know a lot of people in Boston. Have you found a place to live yet? I have a friend who is a Real estate agent there.

Excellent! After looking at the map, it looks like Providence will be no further out for us than some of the far suburbs like Joliet are from Chicago. Makes visiting a snap. We'll definitely have to hook up once we're there.

BTW, am I correct that Shelli lives out that way, too?

Cool! I stumbled across the group site last week. I was hoping it was still active. Yay!

We're looking at the north shore, actually. Beverly/Salem/Peabody area. Em's job will be in Danvers off 128. We're hoping to find something maybe in downtown Beverly, near the train.

This is so exciting! I'm so glad I already know people in the area. That's going to make a big difference.

Don't worry, I plan to come back frequently. Especially once Book 3 is done. I'll be back to Chicago for ACEN and Wizard World for sure, though.

Wow. I admire your excitement. I think maybe I'm afraid to leave the Midwest! Boston though, should be awesome. Good luck!

As I said, I've lived in the Midwest for almost my entire life, and have had a decade in Chicago. I'll always love it here, but I think now is a good time to try something new, as well.

I'll be back to visit frequently, too. So, don't think I'm gone for good!

Good luck with the move, Dirk! It's a major change, for sure, and plenty of props to you two to be getting everything packed and moved in a month. Phew!

Are you going to just miss Anime Boston (con)? Also, the East Coast isn't that bad...I've been here for almost 30 years now lol.

Yeah, no way I can make AB. I hear their Artist Alley sold out in something like 28 seconds this year. Bleh. I'm not looking forward to having to fight for space there next year.

I will be at Connecticon, though.

Looking forward to coming out there, though. So many new places to explore!

Ahhh connecticon. I hope I can go this year - usually doesn't coincide well with my car racing events! I *live* about 15 mins away...irritating.
